The Rappellars at Lower Calf Creek Falls
Lower Calf Creek Falls: I saw pictures of this place online and knew I had to try to get there....but, it is wasn't my initial plan. The original plan was to visit Utah's National Parks the first week of October 2013, but the government had a different agenda. It shut down. All of it. For the first 2 weeks of October. The whole of my time in Utah.
I scrambled to research places that might be open. As it turns out, most photo ops on a grand scale are government owned and operated. Bummer.
Well, so is Lower Calf Creek Falls as it turns out.
I eventually got to the falls.....huffing and puffing with my cameras and tripods in tow. I excitedly set up my tripod, got my settings just right for that silky water effect, and promptly took about 3 reasonably good photos.
I was taking in the grandeur. But then, wait, what's that?!?.... Who's that??! They are ruining my photos!!! I've hiked all this way! I thought, exasperated. Naturally, my husband had a completely different reaction. While he was impressed with the beauty of the falls, the men that popped into view at the top of the falls turned what was certainly going to be boring passive observation into a sporting event! Entertainment!
He was thrilled. Me, less so.
In retrospect, the photos of the men rappelling do add interest and scale to the falls, now I wish I had focused on getting some really cool pictures of them. How often does one witness that kind of thing anyway?? An hour and a half later.... No people. At all. Anywhere.
So, another perk of the rappelling men was that they kept all the other hikers captivated for so long that when they were done, everyone left. A win win!
